- Allman Brothers (8/95 Classic Amphitheater, Richmond, VA)
- Chicago with Crosby, Stills, and Nash (6/1/96 Virginia Beach
Amphitheater, Virginia Beach, VA) - CS&N still sounded good, they covered "Turn, Turn, Turn"
which sounded every bit as good as the Byrds. Bruce Hornsby stopped by and played keyboard on their last song "Ohio"…
Chicago still sounds great and they don't look like they've aged much at all. They have to one of the most talented
group of musicians around. Bill Champlin came off the keyboards to play guitar on a acoustic version of "Look
Away" that was fantastic. They opened with "Saturday In The Park" and "Questions 67 & 68"
and covered songs from their entire 30 year history. When they came out for the encore they did a great version
of "In The Mood" from their latest album, and finished with "25 or 6 to 4". Let me know when
these guys are back in the area!
- Peter Frampton, REO Speedwagon, and Foreigner (7-21-96 Classic Amphitheater, Richmond, VA) - Frampton
opened the show and played a few songs that I didn't recognize, but then played "Lines on My Face". He
closed with "Baby I Love Your Way" and "Do You Feel Like We Do". He was great but only played
for about 50 minutes. REO Speedwagon came next and played virtually everything I wanted to hear - "Roll With
The Changes", "Time For Me To Fly", and "157 Riverside Avenue". They gave a very good
show, Kevin Cronin seemed as energetic as ever. Foreigner didn't sound quite as "polished" as the other
two, but was still a crowd pleaser. Again, they played all their hits. For the encore they played "I Want
To Know What Love Is" and had the audience sing the chorus, they closed with "Hot Blooded". This
was definitely a concert to remember. It's not very often you get a chance to see three Rock Legends in concert
at the same time.
- The Monkees (8-7-96 Classic Amphitheater, Richmond, VA) - This was a fun show. The Classic Amphitheater
was only about half full. Peter, Mickey, and Davy came out and did about an hour and a half of hits. They covered
almost all of their hits, the one song they didn't do was their signature "Monkees Theme". They
all seem to be pretty respectable musicians (Davy even played the guitar!), Peter played banjo, guitar, and keyboards.
They even did a few goofy little skits, just like on the TV show.
- James Taylor (8-17-96 Classic Amphitheater, Richmond, VA) - He put on a good show, as usual. His chatter
between songs is pretty funny, too. The music was great, the backup singers were exceptional. He had a video screen
hanging over the stage, I have mixed emotions about that. I tended to look up at it a lot, why should I look at
that? He's right there!, but OTOH, he does tend to provide some interesting facial expressions that I wouldn't
have seen without it.
- Leo Kottke (10-31-96 Birchmere, Alexandria, VA) - Leo Kottke has to be one of the best guitar players
ever. He was on stage by himself with two guitars, a six string and a twelve string. In addition to his amazing
guitar playing he tells stories, sometimes about his music, but always with his weird sense of humor, reminiscent
of Steven Wright. If you've never heard his music, go out and get "The Best Of Leo Kottke" or "Essential
Leo Kottke". It is difficult to classify his music, it is usually in the folk section of the record store,
I just consider it great guitar music.
- Atlanta Rhythm Section (4-16-97 Innsbrook Pavillion, Richmond, VA)
- Chicago and the Beach Boys (6-14-97, Virginia Beach Amphitheater, Virginia Beach, VA)
- Boston (7-25-97, Virginia Beach Amphitheater, Virginia Beach,
VA) - A fantastic show! Two hours and forty-five minutes of great rock and roll.
- Leo Kottke (8-3-97 Birchmere, Alexandria, VA) - Another
great show, if you ever get the chance you should go see him.
- Elton John (5-13-98 GTE Virginia Beach Amphitheater)
- Atlanta Rhythm Section (6-10-98, The Boulders)
- Royal Crown Revue, The Pretenders, The B-52's (6-30-98, Classic Amphitheatre)
- Hall & Oates, Chicago (7-3-98, GTE Virginia Beach
Amphitheater)
- John Fogerty (7-24-98, Classic Amphitheatre)
- Lynyrd Skynyrd (7-25-98, Classic Amphitheatre)
